Why Doctors Are Worried About A New Social Media Tanning Trend
Living in Florida, we’re no strangers to the sun, but doctors are worried about a new tanning trend making the rounds on social media.
One of my favorite things is to head to the pool or to one of my favorite beaches in Fort Myers, Naples, Sanibel or Captiva and lay out in the sun and soak up some rays. One of my favorite compliments is when I hear “wow, you’re so tan!” Hey, I work very hard on it! Of course here in Southwest Florida that sun is strong and sunscreen is a must. I never go below a 25 SPF because while a tan is great, a sun burn is not. I learned that the hard way when I was in Vegas last week. Ouch!
Doctors are now warning of a new trend on social media called “beer tanning”. No, it’s not enjoying a cold one while laying out in the sun. Rather, it’s using the beer as a tanning agent. People are trading in the sun block for a bottle of beer and literally pouring it on them before heading out into the sun.

Dr. Shilpi Khetarpal, a dermatologist with Cleveland Clinic told Fox 8 just how damaging this trend can be to your skin. She says that beer can keep your skin from breathing which could cause heat stroke or cause a higher risk of skin cancer.
Not only do you need to protect your skin, but do you really want to trade the smell of coconuts for beer? Make the smart choice and trade the PBR for the SPF. You’ll thank me later.
