Bufo Toads Terrorize Florida: Pets in Danger
I’m scared to death of seeing one of these in my yard in Cape Coral. So, here in Florida we’re facing a bit of an issue with these creatures known as bufo toads. These toads are not your garden variety, kind of ugly. They’re large, poisonous and their population is booming.
A while back, people thought it was an idea to introduce these toads to control pests in the sugar cane fields. Well, that plan didn’t quite work out as expected. A trip into today and these Bufo toads are crashing backyard gatherings all across Florida.
Let me tell you, these toads are breeders. According to NBC2, Toad trapper, Jennifer Southall is there dealing with these critters. She’s witnessed some pretty crazy things. Like did you know that a single female toad can lay more eggs than you have Facebook friends. We’re talking 30 THOUSAND! And those eggs? They hatch quicker than you can say “Far out man.”
Bufo Toads Terrorize Florida:
Now here’s where things get really serious. Dogs are like walking treats for these toads. Jennifer’s dog had an encounter with one of them. Let me tell you. It wasn’t a good experience. Vomiting and foaming at the mouth. That’s a bad trip and not a laughing matter.
It’s not just the dogs that are at risk. Humans and our little ones need to be cautious too. Those toads have secretions that can cause some really serious harm. These toads are terrorists in your backyard. And nobody wants that.
So what’s the plan? We should handle these toads with care. Experts in wildlife suggest gently sedating them with lidocaine before placing them in the freezer. Yeah, that’s cool and all, but I’m not putting one of these next to my waffles.
However, if you feel up to it, Jennifer has some advice for those that want to capture these Bufo toads. Wear gloves and goggles. Because you know safety first!
The Giant African Snail And 12 Other Animals That Are Trying To Destroy Florida
The Giant African Snail has been in the news lately as thousands of these things have invaded the New Port Richey area. According to FDACS, “The giant African land snail (GALS) is one of the most damaging snails in the world and consumes at least 500 different types of plants. These snails could be devastating to Florida agriculture and natural areas as they cause extensive damage to tropical and subtropical environments. The snails also pose a serious health risk to humans by carrying the parasite rat lungworm, known to cause meningitis in humans.”

So it’s not just plants, these things will eat the stucco right off your house. And grabbing one with your hands is a band idea, as they can cause meningitis. They’re so badly trying to control these things that they’ve set up a quarantine area around New Port Richey where “It is unlawful to move the giant African land snail or a regulated article, including but not limited to, plants, plants parts, plants in soil, soil, yard waste, debris, compost or building materials, within, through or from a quarantine area without a compliance agreement.” If you’re not familiar, New Port Richey is along the coast just north of the Clearwater/Tampa area. These things have not been reported in our area and it’d be nice to keep it that way. Stucco eating snails? I just paid 3 grand to have my house painted, no thanks.
The Giant African Snail isn’t the only animal trying to destroy Florida. Ranker took a look at some of the animals that hate us living in this tropical paradise, and they want us out.
