If you’re booking summer travel, you may have noticed flights are very expensive and out of Fort Myers, they’re some of the priciest in the country.

Finding cheap flights isn’t as easy as it used to be, especially if you’re flying out of Fort Myers. I do love the convenience though of being able to drive 20 minutes to the airport. Also, because it’s smaller than major airports in Miami and Tampa, you don’t have to get there as early. I think the longest I’ve ever waited to get through a TSA line at RSW was maybe 10 minutes. But of course, with that convenience, comes higher prices on airfare.

CheapAir.com has recently released its annual airfare study for 2023. They looked at 128 million airfares across various cities in the United States. Through their research they put together a list of destinations that have seen the most significant surges in flight prices and how much they’ve gone up. Surprisingly, the study highlights a disheartening reality: regardless of one’s location or departure point, no one appears to be immune from rising prices. On average, airfares have spiked 17% compared to 2022.

Not surprisingly, the research revealed the smaller the city, the larger the increase in price.

According to the study, the top five airports seeing the most substantial increase in airfares are predominantly found in smaller cities. It could be because smaller cities have fewer flights and fewer airlines compared to airports in larger cities. RSW in Fort Myers came in at #9 on the list with a 22% increase in airfare.

You can see the full list of the cities where flight prices have increased the most here, but below are the top 5.

Top 5 Cities in America with the Largest Spike in Flight Prices:

  • 5. Tucson, AZ

Tucson International Airport saw a 25% increase in airfare. I flew into this airport from Fort Myers in December when visiting family. Extremely convenient. Short check-in counter & TSA lines, very small terminal. I’ve found, though, that prices are consistently high flying into Tucson compared to Phoenix.

  • 4. Greensboro, North Carolina

Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro saw a 28% increase in airfare. They offer 4 airlines: Allegiant, American, Delta & United.

  • 3. Dayton, OH

Dayton International Airport saw a 30% increase in airfare. One perk is that parking starts at just $5 per day. They offer 5 airlines, with their newest being Avelo with flights to Orlando.

  • 2. Akron, OH

Akron-Canton Airport saw a 32% increase in airfare. They offer 4 airlines with 18 non-stop flights.

  • 1. Flint, MI

Bishop International Airport in Flint saw the largest increase in airfare at 35%. They only offer 3 airlines: Allegiant, American and United.
